If you’re overweight, you need to either increase your exercising to the point where you are burning 1000 or more calories a day or decrease your intake of calories.

3500 Calories Equals 1 Pound
Did you know that 3500 calories equals about 1 pound of fat? This means if you want to lose a pound you need to burn 3500 more calories than you consume. If you can reduce your diet by 500 calories a day, you would lose about a pound a week.
As you can see, you don't have to go on a really rigorous diet in order to lose weight. All you really need to do is reduce your caloric intake and be patient. Here are some healthy ways to do that.
Count Your Calories
Regardless of what diet you choose, you have to learn to count calories, which means you need to know how many calories are in all the food you eat.
In many cases, the food will have nutrition labels that include the number of calories it contains per serving. If a food doesn’t have calorie information, you can find it on the Internet. A whole chicken might not come with nutrition information but if you search Google on “calories in 6-ounce chicken breast grilled,” you would find the answer is about 260. And if you search on “how many calories in grilled chicken drumstick and thigh”, you would get the answer that it’s about 181, excluding bone.
To get information on the calories and grams of fat in a wide variety of foods, you could go to http:/www.ntwrks.com or “Mike’s Fat Gram Chart for 1000 Foods.”
At first, you may find that counting calories is kind of a nasty task. But if you stick with it, you’ll see it eventually becomes almost second nature. For example, once you learn that for breakfast you can have a nice portion of the right cereal, 8-ournces of low-fat yogurt (or a banana) and coffee with an artificial sweetener, you won’t ever have to count those calories again.
A 2000 Calorie Diet
One safe and healthy way to lose weight -- if you can be patient -- is a 2000-calorie diet. What would this diet look like? It would probably look much different from the way you eat now. As noted above, if you have gained weight or are gaining weight, it's because you're consuming more calories than you are burning off.
You can reduce your caloric intake to 2000 calories by having a breakfast consisting of a three egg white omelet, a couple of slices of grainery toast with jam, some fat-free yogurt and a tiny piece of fruit.
Your lunch might consist of a glass of fruit juice, a salad with one chicken breast, three tablespoons of pasta and some peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers.
Dinner on a 2000-calorie diet? It might be roasted chicken wings and legs, mashed potatoes and vegetables, a toasted roast beef sandwich, steak tacos or pita peperoni pizza.
A 2000 calorie diet even allows you to have some low-calorie snacks. For example, Sunmaid Mixed Fruit tastes great and there are only 100 calories in a quarter cup. Dell Monte's Super Fruit Mixed Fruit Chunks is tasty and a one-half cup has only 70 calories. Or you can have whole-wheat pita chips since 11 of them equal only 120 calories. You can eat these chips all by themselves or with a dip, a spread or hummus.
As you can see, a 2000 calorie diet isn't as much fun as being able to eat chocolate cake, French fries and a big bowl of ice cream. However, you can still fix tasty and healthy meals and if you stay on the diet long-term, you will definitely lose weight. After all, you may be reducing your caloric intake by as much as 1500 a day so you should be able to lose a pound in a little less than three days or several pounds a week. So, even if you're 30 pounds overweight, a 2000-calorie diet might get you down to where you want to be in as few as 90 to 100 days.
Ready For Just 1500 Calories A Day?
If you want to drop that excess weight even quicker, you can choose a 1500-calorie diet. In fact, you could go on a 1500-calorie a day diet and still have two snacks a day.
Your breakfast could consist of blueberry oat pancakes, waffles and berries, peanut butter and banana pancakes or a bean breakfast burrito. Your lunch might consist of a roast beef sandwich with horseradish, a turkey avocado wrap, a ham and Swiss cheese sandwich or a black bean taco salad. What's for dinner? It could be steak tacos, a toasted roast beef sandwich and salad, cilantro-lime shrimp fajitas or a pita pepperoni pizza.
For snacks you can have frozen hot chocolate, a raspberry peach smoothie, melted cheese tortilla or corn chips and salsa Verde.
Do you have to eat at home all the time? No, you don’t. You can eat dinner out occasionally. For example Applebee's has an Asian crunch salad and spicy shrimp diavalo that comes in at just 500 calories each. Alternately, you could go to Chili's for a guiltless buffalo chicken sandwich with baked beans. Boston market gets in on the Weight Loss act, too, with roasted turkey breast, vegetable stuffing, a fresh fruit cup and steamed vegetables.
Here is another surprise. Even if you're a fairly sedentary woman -- who doesn't get a lot of exercise – you will lose weight on about 1500 calories a day. And a sedentary man can consume about 1800 calories a day and still lose weight.
Believe it or not, a 1500-calorie diet is not all that restrictive. There are many things you can eat and enjoy -- so long as you stick to the right foods and smaller portions.
