Lyme Disease - Lyme disease season runs from April to September. Lyme disease is a bacterial infection contracted from being bitten by an infected tick. If your family and pets spend time in Montenegro’s woods, you should take preventative measures to reduce or prevent tick bites.
How to Protect Yourself from Ticks
Use insect repellent that contains a high percentage of DEET (diethylmethyltoluamide). Make sure not to get the spray into your eyes, mouth, nose, or into any open wounds. DEET is safe for children over two months of age, but you should help your children to apply it safely.
tick Lyme Disease Protect Your Family and Your PetsSpray your clothing and gear with an insect repellent containing permethrin or deltamethrin. Permethrin is best, unless you have cats. Permethrin is poisonous to cats, so deltamethrin is recommended instead.
Spray your campsite with a pyrethoid-based insecticide.
When in the woods, protect yourself by wearing long pants and a long-sleeved-sleeved shirt. Tuck your pants into your boots or socks if possible. Wearing a hat also provides good protection, because ticks like to hide in hair.
Treatment
There is no vaccine currently manufactured for lyme disease, but a single 200-mg dose of doxycycline is effective in preventing lyme disease if taken within 72 hours of being bitten by an infected tick.
Tick-borne Encephalitis
Tick-borne encephalitis is another disease which is transmitted by tick bites. It is a viral infection of the central nervous system. Protecting yourself from lyme disease will also protect you from tick-borne encephalitis. Source from http://www.dailynewsmontenegro.com/lyme-disease.html
